In winter the Valkmusa bog is quiet and wide open. Snow covers the tussocks and shrubs, silvery dead pines stand out against the pale sky, and the tracks of fox, hare and moose in the snow tell you who has passed this way before you. Snowshoes take you where you cannot go in summer: right into the middle of the open bog, where the landscape opens up in every direction.
The trip starts at the Simonsaari parking area in Valkmusa National Park, where the guide helps you get fitted with snowshoes and poles – no previous experience is needed, as long as you can walk normally. We move at a relaxed pace out onto the wintry open bog and learn how the bog, its plants and its animals survive the winter. Halfway through we take a break at Simonsaari: hot cocoa is poured from a thermos and there is a small sweet treat to go with it – a good moment to warm up and take in the view. After the break we return along the same route to the parking area.
The trip takes about 3 hours including preparations. Departure times are agreed with the group between 10 am and 1 pm so that the trip is completed in daylight. Group size is 6–30 people. Dress in layers for winter weather; warm, waterproof footwear is best, and winter boots can also be borrowed if needed.
The price of 234 € includes 6 people, and each additional person is 39 €. The price includes guiding, snowshoes and poles for the whole group, a hot drink and a small snack, and liability insurance. Bookings must be made at least three days before the trip. Retkipiste is a responsible partner of Metsähallitus (Parks & Wildlife Finland).
